Headboard Project

Brian and I were in the need of a new headboard....but as you know that can get pretty expensive.  A custom upholstered headboard can be several hundred dollars and we have run out of $$$$$ so we decided to make our own.

We found this great old door for $20 at an antique store and thought it would be perfect.

Brian measured and figured out how much we needed to cut off to fit our queen mattress.....which meant POWERTOOL TIME!

He only had to remove one panel.

This hole will be at the bottom so you cant see it....

And we removed the hinges

Then we started sanding it down to get a smooth finish

We liked the way it looked with the natural wood......but we had already decided we were painting it and had bought the paint beforehand.

Brian added some wood to either end to make it look more "finished."  Then he started building the support and frame to attach to the back.  (I'm starting to be really impressed with his handy skills at this point)

There was a hole where the hinges were......

this was sanded down and leveled out after this

but Brian filled it in because he is handy like that.

Brian filled in all the gaps

And it ended up looking like this!!!

LOVE IT!

Strange color you might ask??? Well the color was picked from this fabric

Brian said he is okay with the color because we are going to be living in a khaki box so a pop of a crazy color was good with him but I later overheard him talking to my dad about the color and he told my dad that he just painted it that color because he was told to.....which is not true.

THE BEST PART OF THIS PROJECT WAS THAT IT ONLY COST US $60!!!!  That includes the door, paint and lumber!!!! not too bad!

and we have cabinets!

I've been a little M.I.A. this week.....but today was a big day.....THE CABINETS ARE IN!  I was so excited that we could combine the old and the new and you can't even tell the difference. We are thrilled about how it all looks.  (keep in mind, these are just primed white, they will all be gray)

They still need to be painted, and hardware needs to be put on, appliances hooked up, and granite and sink have to go in......but we are getting there!!!

pantry
This is where the refrigerator used to be, we added deep drawers here
double ovens going in there!!
new refrigerator spot

This is on the other side of the fireplace, we had the cabinet man make some doors for here to match the kitchen.

here are what the old doors looked like....shutters
I will have better pictures later of the kitchen and more details.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO MY MOTHER-IN-LAW, SHANNON!!!  WE LOVE YOU!!!!!

STAIN!

The floors have been sanded and it was time to stain them.....the only problem was we had NO clue what color we wanted.  Our floor guy was nice enough to do this for us.....

We ruled out the second from the left, we thought it was too red.  We also eliminated the far right....too dark. Brian and I went back and fourth on the remaining two.  We finally made a decision and the winner is............

Early American!!!!

The floors were stained today and I just drove over to take a peek.

I like what I see!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Friday the 13th...on a Wednesday!

Yesterday was a weird, not so good day.  It was the 13th....but a Wednesday.  It started out with my mom and I going to my cabinet man's workshop to pick out hardware.  I had this weird feeling that maybe he wasn't making everything we thought he was.  So I asked him about drawers and he said he didn't know he was making drawers, he thought just drawer fronts!!!! AHHHHH! Let me go back and explain....as you can see in previous pictures, we kept half the kitchen and tore out the other.  But the drawers weren't so sturdy, so we were just going to have all new drawers made for everything.  He had made drawers for all the new stuff, but not the old.  I kinda panic a little because the cabinets are going in Monday and we would of had no drawers, but he said he would take care of it.  whoosh!  But then I had to call Brian and break the news....which means more $$$$$$.  Lesson learned, you gotta make sure you communicate and say exactly what you want!

But I did get to see all the doors and drawer fronts....and I was very pleased!

I really wanted a simple style for the cabinets, so we went for shaker style.  I love them!

Here is the hardware I chose

It's pretty modern, but what the heck, we are young!

Back to the bad day.....

A house in my neighborhood caught on fire and burned!!!!!   It was horrible.  I felt so bad for the couple and a little guilty for standing there and watching their house burn.  I would of taken a picture but I thought that was a little disrespectful.  You can read about it HERE.

Then I decided to clean our toilets (they were pretty nasty after sitting there for a few years)  so I ran over to Rite Aid to grab a few supplies.  I guess it was close to closing time, but the doors were unlocked so I went in.  I got the few things I needed and then......ALL THE LIGHTS WENT OUT AND THEY LOCKED THE DOOR!!!!  They didn't know I was in there!!!! I ran into the lady that was still there (I think i scared her)  and she wouldn't let me buy the stuff I needed! bad day....

After I got back to my parents, I was washing my face for bed....and I stepped into the shower to grab my face wash (I didn't realize Brian had taken a shower and the floor was wet) and I slipped! My left foot went right out from underneath me and I landed on my right knee and the rest of my right leg was behind me.  Not the best position to land it.  I must of screamed REALLY loud because my mom and Brian were right there before I knew it!  I was also crying like a baby (which I think kinda freaked Brian out, I'm not a crier and he had never seen me like that before).  It really hurt.....and I spent the rest of the horrible day like this....

Two ice packs! It really could of been
a lot worse...I could of broken my leg!!!

granite and grass cloth and paint...OH MY!

Brian and I took a trip to Norcross, Ga today to visit Stone Connection to pick out our granite slab.  It was so fun to see all the different options!  There were rows and rows to choose from.

Here is ours!!!!!

We are really excited  about it and hopefully it will turn out great!

The grass cloth wallpaper was hung yesterday

I loved how it looks!

And Brian has been laying paper and plywood to get ready for the carpet installation in the bedrooms!

I've never shown pictures of the master bathroom, i'm not sure why, I guess I forgot! But here it is....

It is lots bigger than what we had in our old house, the vanity has drawers (which we  didnt have before), and it is connected to our room!  We hope to one day redo it and update it a little more, but it is SO much better than what we had before.

Brian started taping it off and primed and painted the first coat.

I plan to recover that old window valence in a fun fabric too!!!

Counter Tops and Organizing Stuff

Brian and I had a chance to pick out counter tops for the kitchen over the weekend.  Well we didn't actually pick it out, but we were able to see some of our options.

These are the ones we pulled out.  The one to the far left is a quartz that kinda looks like carrara marble.  I have always wanted marble but I don't think the up-keep price is worth it.  It sure does look good though....

The granite in the middle we like, but they are pretty much the same as what we had in our other house and I really wanted a different look.
Below is what we THINK we are going to go with.....

It has lots gray and cream in it, and we think it will look great with the paint colors we have picked.  Willow creek is the cabinet color and eagle rock is the island color.  We aren't going to decide until we go the warehouse to pick out our slab though, because every piece is different!

Now I want to introduce you to my most favorite store ever......

I had my first experience with this lovely place the summer before my freshman year at Auburn University when my cousin and I were shopping for our dorm.  Basically I started hyperventilating when I walked in the door.  I LOVE to organize and this store was made for ME!!!!  My mom had to tell me to calm down and relax and then had to practically hold me back from throwing everything into our buggy.  The store is filled with lots of unnecessary things, but to me...it was an OCD dream!!!!  Here are some of my favorite things i've gotten over the years...

I just ordered this great lunch box! I've been looking for one for a while and I hope this will be the winner.  I'm really weird about my lunch box for school.  I've been using a cloth one and when something leaks, it's a disaster.  Hopefully this will be better, and I love the aqua and red.  (you are probably asking yourself "is this person 5 years old, who cares about a lunch box???"  WELL I DO!)

Also, any moms out there looking for "earth friendly" snack or sandwich bags......I just saw these on ETSY and they are 50% off!!! such a cute idea and a great way to save money on zip lock bags!
